Meet a Local Entrepreneur Who Sends Cupcakes Around the Planet

Hometown News enjoys when people tell us how they got started in their ‘off the beaten path’ careers. Meet an area baker who has taken a family tradition and turned it into fruition for his wife and twin boys.

Congratulations on the success of your company. Tell us about yourself: “My name is Orran Booher. I’m originally from Kingston, Jamaica and for years have called Atlanta home. My love for baking came at a tender age when I used to help my mother bake cakes for family and friends at Christmas. That gave me the drive to bake a cake from scratch and I’ve been doing so ever since.”

You’ve had the idea of a cupcake empire since 2006, but decided instead to pursue school here? “I at-tended The Art Institute of Atlanta where I received training in Baking & Pastry which allowed me to approach this business commercially and profitably. In 2012, I thought of the Baker Dude concept, a cupcake retailer whose cakes are ‘more than just frosting’ and gave the consumer a wonderful culinary experience.

Your Bohemian longings charmed you to leave Corporate America behind? “It became clearer to me that I needed to step out on faith and pursue a creative career. So I decided that the first chapter would be Baker Dude. And so a month after resigning from my desk job, Baker Dude was born with orders pending fulfillment before we even started!”

Tell us about the product: “We currently offer six flagship flavors and three of them are available in Gluten Free & Vegan options. Customers can pick up their orders from 6 Atlanta area UPS stores the next business day after placing their order.”
You do a lot for charity and are compelled to help young people, right? “Upon launching, I donated cup-cakes to the charity Moving In The Spirit for a fundraising event. They assist Atlanta area youth and improve lives through programs like dance. It’s really remarkable to hear the transformation stories.”
