New Art Gallery. Historic downtown Duluth is the site of the new Duluth Art Gallery, located at 3530 W. Lawrenceville St. The gallery showcases works by local artists in a variety of media — oil, photography, mosaic tile, pastels and more. The Gallery features items both for sale and display. Horizon Theatre Presents “Hallelujah Street Blues.” Written by Atlantan Valetta Anderson, this comedy-drama tells the tale of Josephine, an elderly matriarch who simply wants to live out her days peacefully in her long-time neighborhood. That peace is shattered when a wave of gentrification and rampant development threatens the fabric of the community. The play runs through August 24. Tickets are $20-$25. Learn About Education in DeKalb. PRISM presents a Georgia Department of Education and DeKalb County schools update on August 14, featuring Kathy Cox, Georgia Department of Education School Superintendent. This is an opportunity for residents to learn about initiatives that impact the Heart of DeKalb and ask questions that are important to you and your family. Candidates To Speak at Republican Barbecue. The Republican Party of DeKalb County will hold a ‘Meet The Candidates Barbecue and Political Stew” on August 23 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club, 118 Chestnut Dr., adjacent to I-85 near its intersection with Chamblee-Tucker Rd. Jazz on the Lawn at Callanwolde. Callanwolde’s “Jazz on the Lawn” series presents Marsha DuPree on August 8 at 7:30 p.m. A well-known female singer in the Southeast, Mr. DuPree’s rich musical interpretations are fluid and polished. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a picnic and enjoy this concert under the stars. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Callanwolde’s indoor courtyard. Special Healing Service. Norcross First United Methodist Church will offer a Healing Worship Service on August 10 at 7 p.m. You are invited to come for healing for yourself or on behalf of someone else who you know is in need of healing from illness, grief, depression, broken relationships, addictions, spiritual emptiness or confusion, and anything else that separates us from a full relationship with God. Decatur Civic Chorus Seeks Singers. The Decatur Civic Chorus has openings in all sections for the 2008-2009 season.
