Millennial Manager
Guides Embry Hills Kroger
Through Transformation
The first thing Christian Thompson did when he was
put in charge of the Embry Hills Kroger last November
was get to know his people. “Then I focused on clean,”
said Thompson from his upstairs office overlooking the
aisles. At 22, Thompson was the youngest person ever
to be promoted to manager at Kroger, and now at age
26 he has been tasked with overseeing the Embry Hills
store through its transformation into Kroger’s newest
concept Marketplace. His father Rufus Thompson was a
Kroger district manager for 28 years. Through his father
Christian knew Bruce Lucia, president of the Kroger
Company’s Atlanta Division, who would become a men-
tor to him.
A year after his father’s death, Thompson began
working for Kroger as a bagger at age 17. He went on to
college (Georgia State University) to play baseball and
study finance. “I had Tommy John surgery my sophomore
year,” he said. “Baseball probably wasn’t going to work
out so I started taking Kroger more seriously.”
Thompson began a management internship his junior
year and worked at Kroger’s #1 store at the time on Caro-
line Street.

And so congratulations are in order for these THS
football players who have signed to play at colleges
that recruited them: Malachi Buckner, Gardner-Webb;
