News slowly surfaced late this past autumn of last year about incredible surgery performed on an infant, back in August 2018, by surgeons at Children’s Health- care of Atlanta (CHOA) in Sandy Springs. They placed experimental, 3-D printed splints, created by biomedical engineers at Georgia Tech, in order to help a baby born with such fragile airways so as not breathe adequately. This remarkable event was the first procedure in our state to place 3-D tracheal splints in a pediatric patient, and it made Georgia medical history. Baby Amir had been born with congenital heart disease and as well a condition that causes life-threaten- ing airway obstruction. Amir’s mother told Children’s Healthcare officials that her baby cried constantly, but she didn’t know what was wrong with him. “I wanted to help him but I couldn’t,” she said, and the desperate situ- ation was heartbreaking for her. Children’s Surgeons Saved Baby Using Experimental 3D-Printed Splints Born with an abnormal airway, Baby Amir was in critical condition until doctors placed special splints to help him breathe, in a first of its kind pediatric surgery in Georgia.
