Dunwoody, which the state of Geor- gia formally incorporated in 2008, has a much longer tradition as a rural commu- nity. It dates back to before the Civil War, when citizens named the farming areas around part of Mt. Vernon Rd. after Major Charles Dunwody who hailed from Sandy Springs. (Legend has it that a clerical error by the local post office misspelled the name Dunwoody and the typo stuck.) Dunwoody Village thus sprang up, a small neighborhood. It centered on the crossroads of Mt. Vernon and Chamblee Dunwoody trail, the pathway leading to Chamblee. The historic intersection is marked by the iconic old Dunwoody Farmhouse. The old commuter local Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) is first class in every way, and now added to its outstanding facilities is a brand-new aquatic therapy pool. Located at CHOA Scottish Rite Hospital at 1001 Johnson Ferry Road NE Atlanta 30342, it opened this past May and has started hosting therapy sessions. The pool is specially designed to provide aquatic therapy for various rehabilitation programs at Children’s. They include inpatient, outpatient and sports medicine rehab. The track record of aquatic therapy is impressive, improving function, endurance, balance and strength, stability, gait and flexibil- ity. Pain relief is provided for patients with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular and pulmonary condi- tions. A pediatric aquatic therapy pool has long been desired for rehabilitation services at Children’s because of the great benefits it has proven to provide for patients. “This therapy pool will help us accomplish that goal and enable us to care for an even wider scope of patients,” said Susannah Kidwell, director of reha- bilitation services at Children’s Health- care Scottish Rite Hospital.
