Tucker High sophomore Gina Fra- zier got on the second step of the medal stand at the 2019 GHSA Dr. Lucia Norwood Gymnastics Championships in May with a silver medal finish in the floor exercise. Even when Northlake was newly opened in 1971, it had none of the excitement of other shopping malls in DeKalb, such as older, more established Lenox Square (1959) in Buckhead or Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody. Indeed when Perimeter opened, also in 1971, it immediate- ly eclipsed its cohort Northlake Mall, leaving it with a permanently low pro- file. Northlake as a shopping center never really got enough retail traction to be competitive, declining precipitously to the point it’s at today. But promising opportunities are ahead. Back in April, ATR Corinth Part- ners, a Dallas, TX-based company which since 2016 has owned Northlake Mall (excepting the sizable Macy’s parcel), tendered a formal request to the City of Tucker. ATR asked Tucker to annex Northlake Mall, which lies adjacent and just outside Tucker city limits. Indeed annexation would benefit both enti- ties. Because Tucker residents don’t pay city property taxes, the city generates income from business licenses—a thriv- ing Northlake Mall would therefore fuel Northlake Mall Owners Petition Tucker Annexation Continued on page 5 There haven’t been many shoppers at this mall for some time now, and here’s hoping it’s time for a transformative change.
