Ashford Park Teacher Honored by GA Dept. of Ed Laura Miltner (holding bouquet and award) with school and state officials ( ) In a visit to Ashford Park School in Chamblee in Jan- uary the Georgia Dept. of Education made a surprise visit to recognize Laura Miltner, a teacher in a unique Geman dual immersion program there, as World Language Edu- cator of the month for the state. It was a festive event and a richly deserved award for a teacher who loves her work. In Ashford Park’s dual language program, students spend about half their school day using German and the other half in English. Laura teaches kindergarten math and science, in German, to her students. “Frau Miltner has the herculean task of getting 52 kindergartners to begin understanding and speaking German,” a parent said in in a letter nominating her for the award. Miltner, who has taught 5 years at Ashford Park in a 20+ year career, starts with young students, a perfect opportunity to begin mastery of a second language. “I believe that immersion language learning is a great way,” she says, “to develop flexibility in the brain, promote cultural understanding, as well as seamlessly to learn a second language.” Continued on page 3 Hamilton Stage Actor to Speak at Oglethorpe Graduation Christopher Jackson in George Washington role in the smash Broadway hit.
