Visions of a Connected Dunwoody Young girls are ready to take a safe, fun ride on their “freedom machines.” (Bike Walk Dunwoody, Facebook) Dunwoody is a terrific community, and there’s a group of earnest citizens who articulate it could somehow offer more. Bike Walk Dunwoody (BWD), it’s called, and since 2009 they’ve been laying down a wonderful bass beat. It’s to the effect that Dunwoody continues to make quality of life improvements when it accelerates effective ways and means to connect the community with alternative means of transportation. BWD, in a marvel- ous term, calls for “human-powered movement” but that requires safe avenues to that end. Bike Walk Dunwoody’s vision of its beloved com- munity is that cycling and pedestrian modes are not always just for recreation. It sees biking and walking as viable alternatives to get to school, church, shopping or to meet friends for coffee or lunch. Dunwoody is heading in that way. The City of Dunwoody listens and there’s been signs of progress during key times when it’s develop- ing a Master Transportation Plan that includes bike/ walk trails. There’s now 4-feet bike lanes on 1.2 miles of Ashford Dunwoody, added in regular repaving on the stretch between Mt. Vernon and Perimeter Center East. According to PR representative for the event Becca Meyer, East Lake Country Club and the Profes- sional Golf Association [PGA] is well prepared. For the fourteenth year in a row, the top 30 golfers vying for the Fedex Cup will converge on the historic East Lake Coun- try Club for the prestigious Tour Championship sponsored by the Southern Company and Coca Cola. The Tour Championship tourney is the last event in the PGA’s year. It doubles as the final tournament in the year-long race for the Fedex Cup. Only the world’s top 30 golfers based on their accumulated points earned in previous competitions can compete at East Lake. Continued on page 5
